Allen Park — After re-signing several of their own free agents and quickly adding cornerback D.J. Reed, defensive tackle Roy Lopez and linebacker Grant Stuard, the Lions fleshed out the depth chart a little more last week with some additional pieces in the second wave of free agency.
After doing in-depth film reviews on Reed, Lopez and Stuard last week, we've opted to similarly introduce you to the other newcomers through their tape.
Here's what we learned by studying the film of Detroit's four recent signings.
Quarterback Kyle Allen
Quick bio: Undrafted out of the University of Houston in 2018, Detroit will be Allen’s sixth stop in eight seasons. He started 12 games for the Panthers in 2019 after Cam Newton suffered a season-ending injury in the preseason and another four for Washington in 2020 before a dislocated ankle sidelined him for the remainder of the year.
Allen has been a backup for four different teams over the past four years, starting two games for Houston in 2022. He’s attempted only one pass in the past two seasons.
Games studied: Miami (2022), Cleveland (2022), Houston (2024 preseason)
What the film says: The 2022 tape was ugly. It didn’t help that Houston’s offensive line was porous, and the Dolphins jumped out to a 30-0 lead by the half in Allen’s first start in more than two years.
