This is exactly what I thought (and have previously posted). This organization is not going to deviate from its credo of developing from within, and they were never going to be biting on these crazy FA packages. I’m more often wrong (like, always) in predicting who they’ll draft but I just don’t see how they don’t use the top few picks on linemen, and particularly D lineman. There are big short and long term needs there, and they don’t have too many shots to waste on that this time around. Let’s not forget either that Holmes made giving Goff the protection he needs to be effective (at all ) job 1 year 1. Nothing about that has changed.
Who out of the star core that has to be paid could they trade for at least a second? Trade that guy, use money saved toward Garret and throw in that second with this year's 1st and 2nd and their comp 3rd. Gibbs and Hutch would be untouchables.
So a first, two seconds, and a third round pick. Would that do it?
I'll be pissed if a division team (like Chicago) gets him for something ridiculous like a first and a third.
Whoa, you say Gibbs and Hutch are untouchable but what about Sewell and Saint, these two are true cornerstone and I'm not trading either of them straight up for Garrett.
Don't think I am trading Branch either because he will have more impact over the seasons depending on if the Lions can extend him next year plus Safeties are cheaper.
Not giving up McNeil either, we are talking about how many years in age difference and a DT like McNeil make the DL go plus they are cheaper.
It comes down to Joseph or JaMo and considering how much a Garrett contract would be it might take both and IDK.
It's not just the money with Garrett it's also the age, how many years of high-end play does he have, is it 2 years and we get the decline until we get a part time player. That possibility exists while the core of the Lions is young.
Oops, how typical of me to get a name wrong, I wanted to say Joseph don't ask me how I came up with Fields instead. Thanks for asking and I will fix my comment
I’m with Holmes and Agnew on this draft class. Like last year was a good class to address the CB position, this year it’s the DL. Maybe the best class since Hutch-Walker-Kavon but deeper inside.
Would you tag Carlton Davis? Gonna be 29 mid-season. Has a long injury history. Probably values out at 14-18M a year. I think it would be fair to have him play on the 19.1M tag amount. Keeps long-term books cleaner... most teams extend on the tag unless you're the Bengals though.
The ideal would be to sign him to a 3 year deal in the 45-50 mil range. Like to think he would go for it, guarantee 20-25 mil with a lot of the money up front. In a perfect world his contract would be winding down as the Lions get set to pay Arnold top CB money.
Davis seems like he could take a reasonable contract if he can keep the fit over chasing every last dollar he can get if the fit isn't great. Remember he is coming off a contract where it ended up being a not great fit. Not saying you squeeze him in talks either, just don't overpay.
But if he doesn't want to sign I would tag him, keeping that Secondary strong is too important right now.
That's fair. The cap space is what makes it tempting for me. I'm in the minority that would pick Levi and Barnes over Davis though. I think those two could cost 14-18M combined.

I sure would think about it.

With the cap space this year, I could understand the argument for it, but I probably wouldn't.

Truthfully, this makes the most sense. Keep your star players. My only real question is if this means Davis is gone too
I think it means they’re more concerned with resigning Davis who balled out for them than chasing other teams “stars”.
