I want to know how this happens. Is it a meeting? A group chat? lol like "wait, if terrion is changing I'll take zero. Wait if Gibbs is now changing I want 26. I'll give up my number to you if x switches his, etc." as a coach it seems like it would be kind of funny watching the players do this whole shuffle

I wonder if Gibbs had to negotiate with Arnold for 0 or if Arnold just didn't want 0 anymore.

Maybe I’m off base, but this seems like an unprecedented amount of number changes in a single season.

As I recall, players can only change numbers once every 3 years, unless they buyout the nfl merchandise jerseys made with their number. OR they sign or are traded to a new team. Not entirely sure, i could be imagining this. I just recall a short story about why Jameo didn't change his number last year.

JR, or anyone, please correct me if i am wrong.

Gibbs was always going to change his number. That was evident the moment he got it, as all the singles were already taken at that time. Martin really just rented his number for a few months no surprise he took it back. And PS players and back-ups always upgrade their numbers if given the chance.

Having said that, the only real surprise for me is TA and rakestraw, seeing how they were rooks last year. Maybe if no one is selling your jersey then you don't have to worry about it?

What happened to sub-zero? Did gibbs, jameo have a Bama brawl to divvy up the number 1? They both wore it i think. TA wore 3 at bama. Maybe gibbs threatened TA after losing #1 to Jameo and took 0 as consolation.

JR, can you doing some sherlocking and find the story behind it? /s

Rookies have very few options when they arrive. There are already 73 players under contract, plus a handful of retired numbers, so they often get saddled with an undesirable leftover. You see some changes after cuts at the end of training camp, but more when a number they truly want comes open in 1-3 years with roster turnover. I imagine teams handle prioritizing who gets first dibs when a number like one becomes available. Could be something as simple as seniority.

Seeing 9 but it's on defense...seeing 26 but it's on defense...seeing 0 but it's on offense. Going to take some getting used to! Especially gibbs at 0. That is going to look weird as hell for a while, I'm sure.

I’m only sensitive about a few numbers and 88 is one that should be retired forever. The only person to give glory to the number is Charley Sanders. Someone needs to tell Kenny he can’t fill those shoes

Yeah and Charley wasn’t a stickler about it. I guess my anger is better put towards Mike Williams disgracing it after Charley said it was ok for him to wear it

There are 90 guys on the roster, and restrictions within that, so difficult to take many off the table.
