Locker room buzz: Campbell shoulders loss, Reader feels good, LaPorta's time coming and Bucs marvel about Hutchinson
Detroit — There are plenty of reasons the Detroit Lions didn’t emerge victorious against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
They could have scored more than one touchdown on seven trips to the red zone. The defense could have made one more play to keep the Buccaneers from crossing the goal line a second time.
Dan Campbell and his staff will go through the tape attempting to correct those errors, but the coach is putting this loss firmly on his broad shoulders.
An emotional Campbell said the snafu at the end of the first half was a result of his poor communication to the field goal unit, leading to that group charging onto the field while quarterback Jared Goff was trying to clock it, resulting in a penalty for too many men on the field and a 10-second runoff.
“I asked for improvement from last week, was the story, and we did improve,” Campbell said. “We did improve and their coach cost them. Their head coach cost them this one. Critical error to end the half and 100% on me.
“...There’s no way to justify this,” Campbell said. “It’s a massive error on my part, no one else’s, and it was just between hurry-up field goal and clocking it. And it was 100% my fault, 100%.”
