Reeves-Maybin, a fourth-round draft pick for the Lions in 2017, has spent most of his career with the franchise. He played the 2022 season with the Houston Texans before re-signing with the Lions in 2023.
Can you explain about the "gaining 2 mil in cap space" when they have to sign someone else to replace him? Are they saying they will get someone better for less than 2 mil per year? Seems like a small amount to "save" while still paying him more than that to not play. Especially for someone that seemed like a significant contributor to the team.
Both statements are simultaneously true. They freed up the spending power, but will inevitably need to spend it. That could be a rookie on a half-million contract or it would be a guy like Ezekiel Turner, who filled the same roles on both defense and special teams at a quarter the cap hit.

Im sure salary played a big part. But something tells me this also has something to do with lost OTA time last year.
I can’t say I am surprised. He wasn’t nearly the contributor he was the previous year
Nature of the beast. They can't keep them all
