Last week, a reader asked for an updated look at the team’s depth chart. With little cooking between now and the draft, that request was worth fulfilling.
I'm intrigued by Antoine Green. It seems the Lions were very content in giving him best chance to contribute more last year. . . until his injury. I believe his injury was neck or head. So we think he will be back competing then? If so, that's awesome for him because neck/head injuries are super scary.
He's not under contract, currently. Got jumped by Mahogany in the middle of last season and the team made the quick move to re-sign Muti back in February, so sides might just be moving on.
Yeah, I just went through his film. His NFL film, which is pretty limited, didn't match up with his college scouting report. I'll have more on that later this week.
Really need Sorsdal or Manu to take a big step this year. Both unproven, usually inactive last year. When coupled with Muti, that’s three of your four “reserves” that are big question marks on the unit this whole team is built around. I’d have Sorsdal in the “work to do” category and player to be named later (or Jones maybe) in that depth category
DT and Safety arent near the need that Edge rusher is. They are stacked at DT this year, and obviously only need maybe one depth piece at safety. They need an actual starter at the Edge position.
Hey JR…I know you’re busy this time of year but when it slows down could you do a breakdown of Goff’s interceptions. To me it seems that, throw out the Houston game, his ints happened when he turned down an underneath route and forced it. I’m thinking a healthy LaPorta and a year 3 Gibbs can get rid of most.
Please, dont tell him that. One of Goff's biggest problems is being too safe at times. But youre right, generally when he throws an interception, it is definitely a boneheaded throw more so than an inaccurate throw.
Great breakdown Justin. I’m not sure the “let” Kevin walk but not sure the didn’t either. The safety situation is really interesting and I agree they may not keep both safeties as contracts get extended. Trenches will be fun to watch during draft time and maybe even an “early” safety.
They've done a great job addressing starters and depth while leaving room for upgrades via the draft. People going to be mad when they take a LB in the first lol.
TIL it's spelled Stantley.

The roster looks even better when you put it on paper.
From top end talent to the depth this team is loaded and we haven't even got to the draft.
Thanks for this and everything else on the Substack Justin. Question: is Kayode Awosika not in the picture anymore?

Allen was undrafted out of UH in 20218? This must be that Jon Bois 17778 timeline. 🤔
(Just thought it was amusing, typos happen to all. ☺️)
D-Line makes me sooo uncomfortable.
Isn't Niese in the mix on the OL?
He is not currently listed on Detroit's official roster page and not under, according to NFLPA records.
POD says he's been tendered a ERFA contract - if so, looks like we want him back & he was backup C in 53 last seadon
I thought Yeboah was more of a blocking TE?

The only area that seems so obvious as a draft need, even if Brad and Co. hate to use that as the main strategy, is Safety and DT.
Safety: No clear player on the roster to fill in for an injury. Screams veteran or high talent draft pick for 2025.
DT: Relying on Broderic and Wingo. Need high end talent for 2026.

Well, certainly no team is using a high talent draft pick for a backup safety role. Thats a fill in position, generally by a veteran as you mentioned.
Actually both our safeties were drafted high with no certainty they’d be starting.
No WR? We have razor thin depth with 3 smallish WRs. No depth whatsoever
Basically the same room as last year, no? I do think they’ll address it after round 2.
