Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes met with local media who traveled to the league meetings Monday morning. Here are the highlights from that half-hour conversation.
Looks like the trenches and WR are where our top 4 picks will go. Obviously we don’t talk much about Paschal is because he is not a good pass rusher. But he does provide quality reps and is a decent starter level player . He and Levi are the blue collar players on the D line. I agree that Reed and Levi were very good signings by Holmes. Now up to the younger guys like Broderick and Sorsdal to show some growth. I think Rogrigo was playing well before he got hurt! This D has already star quality
Articles like this is why I pay the subscription. Justin has such a good handle on the league and the team. Things like the release of Z Smith and the signing of Kyle Allen Justin was spot on with his analysis. Great job, appreciate the great work.
Good read. The more I hear him speak and his thought process, the more sure I am this team is in the most capable possible hands. Brad Holmes is a superstar and we are so lucky to have him.
Holmes just has a knack for drafting and matching how he manages the checkbook in his time here.
Why break the bank just to keep Z around when this draft is ideal for doubling dipping on the D line?
I still think that Z ends up finding the few extra dollars he might make somewhere else are not worth what he could be a part of accepting what Holmes is offering.
Don't know there was anything even remotely surprising here but that's because of the way Holmes does his business. It's nice to get some confirmation of what we are thinking.
Really appreciate this recap, this covers a whole lot of ground.
My inference is that a guy like Smith will be revisited, if at all, post draft. If I had to guess, based on his comments, a vet DL like Smith or a G like Scherff is realistically in play (likely an either/or proposition) dependent on how Day 1 and 2 of the draft falls. This seems like a very sound approach.
If there's a deadline for 5th year options for 2022 draft class soon, what does that say for Hutch? Obviously they want and intend to extend him, but does that deadline affect anything in regards to those negotiations? Is it a matter of they wouldn't pick up Hutch's 5th year option knowing they want to iron out an extension? A long way of asking that the 5th year option deadline doesn't mean we'd see a pseudo-deadline of getting Hutch's extension in a similar timeframe.
May 1. I didn't even ask because they'll obviously exercise it if an extension isn't done and the fifth year is leverage for the team. It's only (lol, only) $20 million.
I do wish Brad Holmes would do these types of things more often. He is really clear about things, and always has been, if you listen. But, I guess if he did talk more, all the clickbait sites wouldn't have the opportunity to make money and foment fear or anger.
I’ve become a kind of an expert in translating “Holmes to Fanish”. About Z Smith, ‘We couldn’t afford the void years screwing up 2026’. The guys he mentioned excitement about that didn’t dress much or was on the P-Squad: Loren Strickland Morice Norris and Agude
And…they’re going to double dip on DL like they did at CB last year. Because they need GOOD guys on rookie deals across from Alim and Hutchinson for the future, cause vet DL just got really expensive

Nice write up Justin.

I think his media availability is pretty much the same as other NFL GM’s.
I agree that he is very helpful. Appreciate the transparency and lack of combativeness that sometimes characterizes management/media interactions.
