I wonder if the as-of-now empty 53rd spot is Patrick’s all-but-officially. My crazy hypothesis is the Lions want to see him in practice for a bit first before elevating him to the active roster. Perhaps leaving the spot open is a sign of good faith from the org to Patrick that they intend for him to be active roster.
I think Peko replaces Comininski before game 1. Unless they have someone else in mind. McNeil, Robinson and Levi is a formidable trio. Wingo is more third down rusher . Paschall plays inside too.
Justin, any contractual reason why Martin was picked to go to IR over Cominsky? Thought maybe Lions were doing Cominsky, a team guy, a solid by guaranteeing his salary keeping him on 53, but if I understand it correctly, he has to make it all the way through the week 1 roster for his season salary to vest. So probably not the case.
I'm not trying to be sarcastic. They have a plan to add a player, likely a specific player. Texts I've gotten back from team sources are being coy and unhelpful, but it's like that sometimes.
I guess they expect Reader to be good to go for week 1 since they cut Peko and I guess Broderick Martins knew hyperextension was worse than expected since he went to IR. That being said they only have Reader left at nose tackle and no way they play week 1 without one. Iffy must be expected to miss a little bit too by the addition of Strickland
I noted this in yesterday's Pressers and (no) Scrums post: "That could bode well for one of the team’s younger safeties, Brandon Joseph or Loren Strickland. At the very least, both have practice squad jobs waiting for them if they get cut and go unclaimed off waivers."
Could you give us more info on Niese. I know he is a second year player, mainly a center. He must be more comfortable than Eguakun to make O line calls in a game.
Justin- Couldn't the strategy be to keep the younger guys on the roster since they can be claimed by any team, but cut the 4+ year guys so they can willingly re-sign to the practice squad tomorrow afternoon since the team looks primed for a run this year?
I didn’t mean to say you didn’t mention it - I just meant the discourse on the 53 was ultra focused on other positions (maybe rightfully so with the iffy news being newer)
Justin, what’s your insider opinion on this Tim Patrick WR?

Good article, Justin. Keep up the good work. Very excited to be on your reader list! You go!
10 o linemen....
With 52 - 3 special teamers, means over 22% of roster is DB's. Shows how they value them after last year.
Our special teams are very good traditionally.
Pretty thin at DT, with one finishing recovery

Peko will be back when they swap him out for Skipper, IMO.

Yea, that was surprising to me too.
Justin
Your thoughts on why 52 and not 53?

What changes can be expected from now to week 1 (except the probable addition of another WR)?
Peko gone and Cominsky active? What…?
I think they try to sign two players tomorrow, after they put Commish on regular season IR.
So Peko can sit tight until tomorrow and then re-sign to the practice squad?

Knee not knew...damn autocorrect
Making a 52 man roster harder than making a 53 man roster. Lions clearly the most prestigious team in the league.
Is Strickland the most surprising or just least talked about scenario? Feels like we went over so many others (WR4, RB5, TE3, LB6)

Turns out, both of them.

A trade coming, perhaps?
My money is on trading/signing a WR
