David Montgomery prays as hard as he works. He believes it’s that combination of nurturing his body and spirit that will allow him to take the field for Saturday’s playoff game against the Washington Commanders
Understand and appreciate why the religious stuff made it / is a focus, but this is really all about Monty's training and determination, and the training staff working with him. Can't wait to see him back on the field.
When the Lions first signed David Montgomery, I was the happiest guy around. I saw what he had done on a not-very-good Bears team for a few years. He was the hardest guy to bring down. He would regularly rip the Lions- as well as other teams. He played the game hard- even when the team around him wasn't. He was, as they say, a stud. I loved the pick up then. But getting to know who he is as a man, I like him even more. He is a man of high character, strong will, and exactly the kind of guy that can inspire those around him. I'm delighted he is at the core of this team. He is a walking embodiment of what it means to be a Detroit Lion these days.
What is amazing to me is how many people like David are on this team. Each with an amazing story of determination. Holmes and Campbell have chosen well.
For as long as I've been a reporter, and even more so since I've launched independently, people want to know if I'm a fan of the team. I'm not. Genuinely. That's not the job and I wouldn't be nearly as effective at what I do for you if I was.
That said, I'm still have empathy for what the individuals who make up a team go through. There's few things worse when covering a football team than seeing a player go down with a serous injury. And when it's a player like Montgomery, when you know how far above and beyond they go, you feel it a little more. So, yeah, it's genuinely nice to see this wasn't season-ending, that he was able to apply the same positive thinking and hard work to his rehab and overcome what would have done in many others.
Not a fan? I appreciate the neutrality of your writing and probably a good thing I’m not a beat writer for this team. The articles would go from doom and gloom to Super Bowl winners in one article. There a lot to like about this team.
Many players mention God in passing, but when someone puts the level of emphasis on their faith that Montgomery did today, it would be disingenuous to gloss over it.
And not just the players. Listen to Dan Campbell going on about how they are "destined" to do this, that they were "meant" to be together! To me, it looks like faith is a huge part of how this team operates. It'd be interesting to see just how extensive that is throughout the roster, not to mention the front office, and all the different ways that faith manifests itself and gets expressed.

I am Amazed Montgomery has made it back. Will be even more amazed if he does not at least limp of the field a few times..
Fierce, crazy. Lots of scar tissue. Sounds like the Lions fan base. No wonder we like this guy so much.

Is it Saturday night yet?? LFG!!! D-Mo, you are, as they say, built for this!

Damn it man! You know how to tell a story! Thank you.
Great writeup heading into the game! This game is going to be lit! (as the cool kids say)
Wonderful write up J Rog! DMo is a freight train and I’m so excited to see him back in action with Gibbs!

And prayer 🙏 Thanks for including his faith in your write up, that was so nice to see.
