When people were asked about new Detroit Lions offensive coordinator John Morton at the NFL's scouting combine on Tuesday, one word kept coming up: Ideas.
Isn’t Morton very good at screens? That would be very welcome here , esp if Zeitler doesn’t sign and we have inexperience at guard position. Could this be the year we have 2 guards with limited experience with Glasgow as the back up interior lineman for all three spots?
Do we have any insight as to why he only had a 1yr stay with the lions (the team he grew up being a fan of)?
Also it's nice that he's keeps getting hired by coaches, but why did those same coaches (Sean and Jim) never give him a shot at OC? Lombardi (puke) getting the node over him in Denver isn't inspiring.
Senior offensive/defensive assistant is a low-level position that isn't typically a pathway to promotion. The opportunity to be passing game coordinator in Denver, with a coach that he's been closely connected to, paved the path to an OC job. He left for a promotion, with eyes on this position (not necessarily in Detroit, but Morton coveted being a coordinator again).
If he dials it a tiny bit back on the 4th downs and trick plays because the defense can be counted on to get the ball right back on occasion, it would be a good thing.
Now this is more of why I pay for a subscription, nice article Justin.
After watching the interview Morton did on the Lions site it does look like he is not real comfortable in front of the press. This probably explains why he doesn't have being a HC in mind and this could work in the Lions favor.
Expect him to be real strong with Xs and Os while Campbell and the culture will bring out the rest.
It's superficial, but I can't get over the fact that Morton ran a 4.39 at his Combine. Somehow it adds to his coaching profile in a kind of Billy Beane fashion, as a guy who had unusual athletic ability but ultimately needed to find a different path.

Nice read. Stuff like this makes the subscription worth it.

And he doesn’t feel very confident of 4th and one! I can see why! It’s a gamble!

Awesome piece. Loved getting to know him more. I’ll be analyzing 4th down and 3rd down play calls a lot.
